Details:
Including James Coleman, Sr. as the father of Sarah Ann Coleman, John M. C.
Coleman and James M. Coleman is the result of many leads, capped off by the
1850 US Federal Census for Henry County, Georgia. Here are some other findings
which help our conclusions:
John M. C. Coleman was
married to Sarah Wingfield Ogletree, a widow previously married to William
Jefferson Johnson.
James M. Coleman was
married to Catherine Gillum Ogletree, the older sister to Sarah Ogletree.
We know these two men
were neighbors, as James M. Coleman is listed on records pertaining to the
death and settling of the will of John M. C. Coleman upon his death.
Prior to 1851, the area
that these individuals lived in (modern day Birdie Community of Spalding County,
GA) was a part of Henry County. In the index for the 1850 Henry County Census,
page 221, family 470, we find the following:
James Coleman, 49
years old, head of household
M. A. Coleman, 40
years old, wife of the head of household.
S. A. Coleman, 25
years old, female
J. M. M. Coleman,
21 years old, male (we think this is a typo and should have been J. M.
C. instead of J. M. M.)
J. M. Coleman, 18
years old, male
M. K. Coleman, 15
years old, female
James, Sr. and his family
also appears in the 1840 US Census for Henry County:
Coleman, James
Male: 5/10, 1; 10/15, 1; 40/50, 1
Female: Under 5, 1; 5/10, 1; 15/20, 1
James Coleman appears
to have been born around 1801, place unknown.
After checking the 1830
Census, it did not appear that James and family had yet arrived in Henry County
at that time.
While we await further discovery,
it is our presumption that James, Sr. was the father of both John and James,
Jr. We also have good reason to believe that Jeremiah C. Coleman was a 1st cousin
of James M. Coleman and John M.C. Coleman.
